July 1st, 2008 C’s Make Offers to Posey & Maggette

Marc Spears of the Boston Globe reports:

The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards: Their own free agent, James Posey, and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it’s doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed.

Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 2007-08 and was a NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his first season with Boston. The two-time NBA champion was a strong leader for the Celtics and opted out of the second year of a two-year deal on Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season for the Clippers and played for Celtics coach Doc Rivers in Orlando during the 1999-2000 season.

Interesting. If the rumor about Baron Davis going to the Clippers is true, this may be more feasible than you may think, as the Clippers would have to renounce Maggette’s rights in order to pay for Davis.

With that said, Maggette to Boston still seems like a bit of a long shot. He could undoubtedly get more playing time, and likely a starting job, with most clubs in the NBA. If he were to come to Boston, he’d have no choice but to take a back seat to two perimeter stars in Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Maggette has made it clear that he wanted high minutes and touches out in LA, and despised the sixth man role that head coach Mike Dunleavy had placed him in for a short while. In Boston, he’d get an even shorter end of the stick and likely wouldn’t be on the floor in many late-game situations.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out, but if James Posey decides to pack his bags and cash in big, Maggette would certainly be an exciting replacement option. Stay tuned.
